Bread, as long as it is well chosen, can be an excellent ally in a healthy eating plan.

To help you choose the best bread to eat, we’re going to share 5 factors to consider when making your choice!

5 factors to consider when choosing bread:

1. Which flour is in the largest quantity?

The best bread to eat should be made with wholemeal flour, regardless of the grain.

Sometimes a bread may be sold as wholemeal, when in fact it contains a higher percentage of white flour.

It also happens frequently in carob breads, which could be excellent if it weren't for the high content of plain wheat flour.

2. How much salt?

Fortunately, this issue is regulated by law. In 2018, only 1.4g of salt was permitted per 100g of bread, which, in my opinion, is still excessive, given that the recommended intake is only 5g/day. More recently, there have been incentives for bakeries to further reduce the salt content of their bread, with a seal of excellence being awarded to those that reduce the salt content to 1.2g in 2019 and below 1g in 2020;

3. Fat content:

Bread is not supposed to have fat, since all that is essential to making it is flour, water, salt and baker's yeast.

However, in some “harder” breads, fat is added for texture reasons. The same happens in sliced breads, where it is quite common to add sunflower oil;

4. Additives:

In order to increase shelf life, sliced breads invariably contain preservatives. But these are not the only additives! Sometimes we also find emulsifiers and flour treatment agents. These are those “E’s” that usually appear at the end of the list;

5. Sugar content:

Sugar in bread? Yes, it happens! And in this case, it’s not just in sliced bread. Some bakery breads, such as carob, beetroot or red fruit breads, can also contain sugar, in order to increase their palatability.

To put it simply: the best breads to eat are wholemeal, rye or mixed breads, with or without gluten (depending on your needs), preferably from a bakery. If you can't buy fresh bread every day, buy in bulk when possible, slice it and freeze it.

How many grams should the bread have?

Another important thing: it is very different to choose a 150g loaf of bread than a 60g loaf! For those who are trying to lose weight, opting for smaller loaves of bread may be the best option.

And let's not forget the filling, which can be just as harmful as the size of the bread. Avoid eating butter and ham every day, opting for nut butter (peanut, almond, hazelnut) and low-fat cheese.

Informed choices are always good choices!

[1

post-1427","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
